McMurray Metis Local 1935 Sign Long-Term Agreement With Imperial Oil

With Imperial Oil expanding their projects in the region – the company has reached an agreement with McMurray Metis.

Nearly 100 people attended Saturday’s McMurray Metis meeting – where the two groups celebrated the signing of the agreement that will see collaboration and mutual benefits to both parties for the foreseeable future.

This new agreement will allow for a more inclusive framework to discuss potential impacts of the Kearl Oil Sands operation – and will also apply to the future Aspen project.

Logistics and Infrastructure Manager at Imperial Jon Murray tells Fort McMurray News – with all the past collaboration – this agreement has been a long time coming.

“When we first proposed the development of our Kearl Oil Sands mine, now as we move forward, we consider other developments in the area, particularly Aspen. This is a key step in that process and a key step in the development of our relationship with McMurray Metis.”

The Aspen project is located 25 kilometres north of Fort McMurray – and once fully running, will produce up to 150,000 barrels of bitumen per day.

CEO of McMurray Metis Bill Loutit says the relationship they have with Imperial is based on trust and integrity.

“That was a significant part of this,” Loutit said. “It is also a wake-up call to other industry partners that we are looking for long-term impact benefit agreements that will benefit both the oil companies and our members.”

This agreement will provide more chances for consultation and environmental stewardship in relation to the potential impact of the projects.

It will also outline the framework for economic benefits through community funding and contracting opportunities.
