Ministers Ralph Goodale and Amarjeet Sohi Talk Trans Mountain With Local Officials

Despite criticism from the opposition – the Federal Liberals are very satisfied with the acquisition of the Trans Mountain pipeline project.

Minister of Public Safety Ralph Goodale and Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Amarjeet Sohi were in Fort McMurray on Wednesday, to speak to local officials about concerns they might have regarding the $4.5 billion acquisition.

The Liberals say this will not result in long-term ownership but rather acts as a bridge until new private sector owners are established.

Minister Goodale tells Fort McMurray News the only way the Feds could stop the delay – was by outright purchasing the project for the time being.

“To stop the political interference from the government of British Columbia. The Federal government has jurisdiction, it has legal authority – there is absolutely no question of that. And we are exercising our authority to ensure this project is completed.”

Goodale says despite opposing criticism, they felt the best way to move forward was to purchase the pipeline – and sell it to the private sector when the time is right.

He notes unlike previous pipelines over the past 12 years, the Trans Mountain expansion will carry resources to tidewater allowing Canada to benefit from the global market.

“When you can access those higher-global markets and prices, it means quite literally billions of dollars in added economic value to the Canadian economy, increased revenues to all branches of government, it means jobs and it means growth.”

Goodale says construction is set to begin in the summer – with an aimed completion date of 2020.
