Minor Hockey Association Adding New Teams Next Season

There are now more options for younger children looking to play hockey.

The Fort McMurray Minor Hockey Association announced Monday they’ve received approval for the addition of a Peewee A and Bantam A team to the Northern Alberta Interlock League beginning in the 2018-19 season.

The existing Atom Development Team will also be added to the NAI – which is made up of teams from across northern Alberta.

FMMHA President Travis Galenzoski tells Fort McMurray News this gives kids, who didn’t make the AA team, a chance to play hockey outside of Fort McMurray’s house league.

“Basically, they’ll be playing in Tier 1 in all of their divisions. We’re putting through a development for all, so we’re adding to the development of our association and the members of our association.”

The existing AA teams will remain in the Northern Alberta Hockey League.

Galenzoski says the work to add these two squads started years ago when the NAI allowed the FMMHA to enter a U15, first-year Midget club, which gave them a seat at the league level. He notes the relationships that were formed since then provided them the opportunity to add the Peewee A and Bantam A teams.

“This has been a long time coming. Again, with relationship nurturing and ensuring that we’re doing the right thing for the kids and the growth of the association.”

Over the last five-years, the club as seen major growth going from 800 members to more than 1200 in the 2017-18 season and as the club continues to grow, Galenzoski says they’ve heard from people they’re looking for more opportunity and this is the result of that.

“We’re listening and we’re trying out best to ensure our kids are being kept in competitive leagues and being provided development opportunities as well.”

The FMMHA’s annual general meeting will be held in June – with registration opening shortly after or before for the 2018-19 season.
