MOB Roll To Second Straight 40-Plus Win Season

The Fort McMurray Oil Barons are heading into the postseason guns-blazing.

The MOB capped up their regular season with a convincing 6-3 win over the Whitecourt Wolverines, lifting them to their third straight win to wrap up the year.

As a result, the Barons finish off the season 42-13-5, good for 2nd in the AJHL’s North Division, behind only the Spruce Grove Saints.

With the current core, Head Coach Tom Keca tells Fort McMurray News they have all the pieces to put together a championship run.

“We’ve got great goaltending, no team wins without solid goaltending, we’ve got a defensive core that can not only defend but chip in offensively as well, and we’ve got five fifty point guys on offence so we feel good about our depth up front. All in all, we feel we’re deep enough and we have the makings of a very good team.”

The three-game win streak earned the Barons their second straight 40-plus win season, which also marks a first in franchise history.

Now heading into the postseason, the MOB enter play as one of the tougher contenders – leaving a sizable target on their back.

Keca says all they can do is focus on round one’s matchup with Bonnyville.

“By no means is this an easy playoff series. We’ve shown throughout the course of the year that in order to win, you have to be willing to play hard every single night. Bonnyville is young and energetic, they play hard and we’re going to have our hands full with them. It’s going to be a great series.”

Playoff packages are on sale starting Monday.

Round One gets underway on Thursday, at the Casman Centre.
