New License Now Needed For Residential Builders

The province is continuing its plan to separate our competent construction companies from those who aren’t.

This is part of the provincial government’s ‘New Home Buyer Protection Amendment Act’, passed last in 2017.

As of May 1, all residential builders need to have a new license if they wish to continue working. For the past several months, temporary licenses were handed out to over 1,600 builders but expired at the beginning of the month.

To get this license, companies have to provide information about their corporate structure, history of building homes, and proof that they follow safety and consumer legislation. People who plan to build their own home do not need to get this document.

“Homebuyers will be better protected when they make the biggest purchase of their lives,” said Shaye Anderson, Minister of Municipal Affairs, in a release. ”

Albertans can now go online where they can get quick facts about possible companies to choose from.

So far, over 1,900 companies have been approved.
