“Nobody Saw This Coming” Reactions Over the Passing of MP Gordon Brown

The recent death of a longtime MP is leaving one local politician quite shocked.

Gordon Brown passed away on Wednesday after suffering a heart attack in his Parliament Hill office. He was the member of parliament for the riding of Leeds - Grenville - Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes, representing the riding as a conservative since 2004.

MP for Fort McMurray-Cold Lake David Yurdiga tells Fort McMurray News he was somebody everybody liked.

“He had the ability to put partisan issues aside and he was able to meet the challenge head-on and everyone appreciated that.”

To say his death was a shock would be an understatement for Yurdiga.

“He was very active and nobody saw this coming – I mean his health was good, he was active playing hockey with the conservative team, and words can’t describe how we feel at this moment.”

Leader of the Conservative Party Andrew Scheer also sent out a statement on Brown’s passing.

"Our Conservative family is shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of our colleague and friend, Gord Brown. His Conservative values, his professionalism and his dedication were all reflected in his hard work in his constituency and in Parliament.”

“His loss is felt by all who have had the honour of serving alongside him in the House. We will miss Gord so much.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also sent out a message of support to his family.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I extend my deepest condolences to his wife Claudine, his two children, and his friends, colleagues, and the many people he represented in his riding.”

“He always showed a deep appreciation and understanding of what it took to bring people together, including our parliamentary community. He brought warmth and kindness to the House of Commons, and was a good friend to everyone, on all sides of the aisle.”

A picture of Brown and a hockey jersey were put on his seat during Question Period.
