Nominations Still Open for “Great Kids Awards”

If you know a child or teenager who’s helped others or the community, you can nominate them for an award.

The province is still accepting nominations for their annual “Great Kids Awards.”

Each year 16 people, between the ages of 5 to 18, are given an award for work they’ve done to overcome challenging circumstances.

“These are kids that have done great things while experiencing life challenges, so those challenges include but are not limited to a physical or mental illness, overcoming a difficult situation or standing up to bullying,” said Laura Fedoriw, Communications Advisor with Children's Services.

Last year, some of the winners included an eight-year who kept supporting two kids who were bullying them – understanding their situation in life and 12-year-old who lost her father to cancer and her home to a fire and decided to help cook lasagne for people in tough situations as well as.”

Fort McMurray also has their own winner after Malja Najmi-Beauchamp received a Great Kids Award for being an advocate to help end bullying as well as counselling students in her school who were contemplating suicide.

“It’s really important that we celebrate them and that we hear their stories so we can be inspired to do great things in our own lives as well,’ added Fedoriw.

Nominations are open until November 24 at 4:00 p.m.

The winners will be chosen by a committee of government community representatives and event partners.

They will be recognized sometime next spring with each getting a West Edmonton Mall attraction pass.
