Northern Lights Health Foundation Celebrates Six-Care Unit Expansion

Thanks to the Suncor Energy Foundation, increased capacity is on its way for the Medicine, Surgery and Continuing Care Units of the Northern Lights Health Centre.

On Monday, representatives of the oil giant, Alberta Health Services, Mayor Don Scott and the Northern Lights Health Foundation held a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the project.

The expansion will see six new non-acute care units consisting of 10 beds on the second floor of the Health Centre.

Murray Crawford is Senior Operating Officer for the Health Centre and he says this is an opportunity to improve healthcare in the region.

“So thankful for agencies like Suncor Energy Foundation. The support that is in this community through industry and from average citizens in the public has just been great and their support of this hospital.”

With Continuing Care reaching full capacity, Crawford notes this frees up 10 beds that are currently occupied by patients on the fourth floor.

The Health Foundation notes when these patients move from acute care beds on the third floor medicine unit, it creates additional capacity for medical and surgical patients.

Crawford adds these new rooms will initially be used by long-term care residents who await completion of the Willow Square Project.

“We’re going to take the ten residents currently on medicine, which is not a place you want to be for a long time and we’ll move them down here where they’ll have more of a resident feel. So they’ll feel more at home and can decorate it the way they want.”

The expansion also allows staff additional room to deliver the appropriate care based on patient’s medical needs.

NLHF adds it will go a long way to improving patient experience for years to come.
