Officials continue to monitor status of river break

Local waterways continue to show signs of thaw.

The latest report from Alberta Environment and Water, posted Friday, says snow cover on the Athabasca River upstream of Fort McMurray is continuing to deteriorate.

Open leads have lengthened and rapid sections are continuing to open up.

While the Clearwater continues to melt in place and small open sections were observed in several locations, but no signs of movement of the ice cover were reported.

Break-up is expected to occur within a week of April 19th.

Meanwhile the municipality is reminding residents to stay off the ice.
