One Person In Serious Condition Following Fire At Mildred Lake Upgrading Complex

One person is in serious but stable condition following a fire at Syncrude north of Fort McMurray.

In a tweet, Alberta Health Services says one person from Syncrude is being transported to the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre in Fort McMurray.

Syncrude also confirmed on its website a person has been injured as a result of a fire within the Mildred Lake Upgrading Complex.

Media Relations Advisor with Syncrude Will Gibson tells Fort McMurray News the blaze broke out shortly before 2:00 p.m Tuesday.

Gibson notes the safety of their workers is top priority.

“So our focus is responding to this incident which includes ensuring the people on our site are safe. For right now access on our site is currently restricted to Syncrude personnel to allow us to officially respond to this incident.”

Wood Buffalo RCMP say one lane of traffic on Highway 63 southbound is closed, as police are assisting with the evacuation of non-essential services from site.

Multiple buses are also arriving on site for employees.

RCMP are asking people to avoid the area. Still no word on what caused the explosion.

Meanwhile, Fort McKay First Nation Emergency Services is asking its residents to take precaution due to the smoke from the fire and the prevailing wind direction.

In a post on their Facebook page, they’re advising people to stay indoors, keep doors and windows closed and keep running an air purifier, is possible.

We’ll have more information as it becomes available.
