Pedestrian struck on Franklin Avenue

Wood Buffalo RCMP are investigating after a pedestrian was struck on Franklin Avenue.

As confirmed by the detachment, local officers are investigating the crash which occurred around 6:00 pm outside the Podallan Pub near the intersection with Richard Street.

According to witnesses on scene, the unidentified man was relaxing with co-workers at the bar when he stepped outside and into the path of an oncoming van which was heading southbound on Franklin Avenue.

A Wood Buffalo Co-op Taxi fleet van was surrounded by three police vehicles at the scene. It's front window was visibly smashed from the impact.

According to company officials, the pedestrian incurred non-life threatening injuries, while the cabbie evaded injury.

The crash perimeter was at least 15 feet from the marked crosswalk and management with Wood Buffalo Co-op say their driver slammed on the breaks but slick conditions hindered him from stopping in time.

Crash scene analysts may be called in but RCMP officials declined to provide further details to Fort McMurray News at this time as the investigation remains in the preliminary stages.
