Pengrowth gains approval for thermal oil project

Pengrowth Energy Corp. is receiving final approval for the first commercial phase of its Lindbergh thermal oilsand development.

The project is near Bonnyville in east-central Alberta where the company will start building a processing facility and drill 23 additional well pairs for steam assisted gravity drainage in September.

It expects to start drilling steam in the fourth quarter of this year.

The company is ordering all major equipment and more than 60 per cent for the newly approved 12,500 barrels per day commercial phase.

Pengrowth also plans two other phases that will still need approval.

The second phase is planned to start in 2017 and would increase production to 30,000 barrels a day.
