Police warn of "blatant disregard for safety" by local drivers

Local police say despite Alberta's distracted driving legislation, there still seems to be a blatant disregard for safety behind the wheel.

Without being able to offer any local statistics, the Wood Buffalo RCMP says cell phone use continues to be the most prevalent offence.

Adding that research shows that a person talking while driving is four to six times more likely to be involved in a collision.

While someone texting while behind the wheel is up to 23 times more likely.

Fines for distracted driving can range from $172 to $402, plus demerit points.
