Portrait of Robin Williams to benefit SOS

Out of a tragedy will come something good.

At least, that's the thought behind a portrait of comedian Robin Williams painted by Fort McMurray artist Russell Thomas.

Thomas says his family has a long term connection to the funny man.

"The connection that our family has to Robin Williams is one with my eldest son who was born two months early in 1999 and just before my partner, his mother went into labour, we had seen Patch Adams and were so inspired by the film that we said if we have a son we're going to have Patch as his middle name," says Thomas.

Thomas says he and his wife decided to put the painting up for auction with all proceeds going to the social profit agency Some Other Solutions Stand Up for Mental Health Program.

The program teaches those with mental illness how to become stand up comedians.

Thomas says the Gallery at Frames and More is contributing professional framing of the painting to the cause.

"He had all the resources in the world to get whatever help in the world he wanted but he still couldn't get that help. So imagine those poor folks that don't have those resources and that's why our social profit agencies are so critically important because they are that resource for people that maybe don't have the resources like Robin Williams did," says Thomas.

Thomas says SOS is planning on a Stand Up for Mental Health show and fundraiser in the fall.
