Province Banning Youth Under 18 from Using Tanning Services

People looking to get that summer tan during the winter will have to be 18 or older.

Starting on January 1st, 2018, the government of Alberta is banning minors from using tanning salons as they note these services are increasing the risk of skin cancer.

According to the GOA, skin cancer is the most common cancer in Alberta and UV radiation accounts for the majority of melanoma cases.

Back in 2014, there were 665 new cases across the province with 64 deaths.

“Research has shown that using artificial tanning when you are under 35 dramatically increases your risk for melanoma,” said Sarah Hoffman, Minister of Health, in a release.

“The changes we're making will help protect our youth from a disease that affects hundreds of Albertans every year and gives Albertans better information about the risks of artificial tanning."

Under the legislation, businesses won’t be allowed to advertise to minors, can’t provide unsupervised self-service artificial tanning equipment in public places, and must post health warnings for their customers.
Executive Director of the Canadian Cancer Society in Alberta and the Northwest Territories Dave Holinda said in a release he fully supports the province’s decision.

“Preventing teen use of artificial tanning equipment will reduce skin cancer, which, despite being highly preventable, is one of the fastest-rising cancers.”

Alberta Health notes they’ve had consultations with different businesses who offer tanning services and health advocacy groups who helped put these regulations together.
