Provincial Funding Allows Chipewyan Prairie First Nation To Build New Laundry Service

Thanks to the Alberta Government, the Chipewyan Prairie First Nation has built a new laundry service to support local industry.

On Friday, Minister of Indigenous Relations Richard Feehan met with Chief Vern Janvier to announce the province’s support of the venture.

After applying for support from Alberta’s Aboriginal Business Investment Fund, the Nation received $492,000 for the project.

Chief Janvier says this will stimulate the local economy in several ways.

“This new business has allowed us the opportunity to provide sustainable employment for a few of our members. With employment like this, our people can establish long-term plans and goals, just like other Albertans.”

With an abundance of oil activity in the region, the Nation saw an opportunity to grow their economy by building an eco-friendly commercial laundry facility.

Feehan says this decision creates the opportunity for the Nation to put money back into the community.

“Alberta is proud to support this business venture,” Feehan said. “It creates a new revenue stream for the Chipewyan Prairie First Nation that can be used to reinvest in important community services and employment and training opportunities for community members. First Nation business contributes to healthier local economies by promoting growth and prosperity that makes life better for all Albertans.”

The Aboriginal Business Investment Fund which promotes the economic growth of Indigenous communities has provided $15 million to 24 community-owned business since 2015.

This facility will employ 20 construction jobs as well as 8 permanent full-time positions.
