RACIDE Outlines Diversity And Inclusion Community Plan For RMWB

Council heard a presentation on a new Diversity and Inclusion Community Plan at its meeting on Tuesday.

A presentation by the Regional Advisory Committee on Inclusion, Diversity and Equality outlined areas where the plan could help improve the region in terms of equality and acceptance.

The plan, which is part of the Canadian Coalition of Municipalities Against Racism and Discrimination, was aided by research and public engagement beginning in 2015.

Chair of RACIDE Bindu Shah tells Fort McMurray News they consulted many focus groups to create the plan – which will look to improve diversity in the RMWB until 2022.

“It is all aimed at creating diversity in our community,” Shah said. “The plan will detail initiatives we’ll take up, and we will mentor and partner with other organizations that are already in the community.”

The plan is apart of the municipality’s commitment to the Canadian Coalition of Municipalities Against Racism and Discrimination.

The plan outlines areas identified by social profit agencies, businesses and residents in the region who would like to see improved equality for all.

Shah adds people in walks of life have dealt with discrimination – and the goal of the plan is to diminish that.

“Personally, I feel if we really do this right, we’ll make this community really welcoming and inclusive. It also helps to retain people who are here and attract new people.”

More information on the plan can be found at rmwb.ca/diversity.
