‘Reflections on the River’ Art Piece Staying Along Clearwater River Causeway

A new public art piece is set to be installed along the MacDonald Drive Causeway.

The ‘Reflections on the River’ project is set to move forward after concerns were raised about the impact it could have on the water aerodrome departure airway – as it will stand between 20 and 23 feet.

This led to Councillor Verna Murphy trying to move the project, at Tuesday’s council meeting, to Snye Point Park. Council rejected the motion with Murphy, Mayor Don Scott, and Councillor Sheila Lalonde being the only ones who preferred the move.

Speaking on Fort McMurray Matters, Scott says the Snye could have been the ‘ideal location’ for the art piece.

“Mainly because of parking and access, I want as many people as possible to see this art piece.”

A representative from the Public Art Committee spoke to council, stating MacDonald Drive Causeway is the right the location.

Scott adds he’s gotten enough motivation from Paul Hunt, the Float Plane Operator, to allow the project to stay where it is.

“He asked that several trees be taken away and believed that the art piece could go where it’s planned and he could fly his float plane safely.”

As many as 20 trees will be removed from the area, several of which will be relocated. In a public email sent to administration, Hunt notes the trees needed to be removed so a distressed plane can have as much as airway as it needs to land safely.

Administration believes the ‘Reflections on the River’ could be installed by early Fall.
