RMWB Celebrating Senior’s Month

June in the RMWB is recognized as senior’s month.

Across the province, the first week of June is celebrated as senior’s week.

“Here we believe it’s very important for us to spend an entire month acknowledging and doing things for our seniors so that we can have them active in our community,” said Pam Burns, Senior Advocate with the St. Aidan’s Society.

Events have been planned for the month, with the seniors having the chance to already enjoy a pancake breakfast, many luncheons, programs at the library, Bingo, and just chances to grab a cup of coffee and talk with peers.

On June 15, the Golden Year’s Society will be hosting the second annual Wellness Expo. Over 20 vendors will be in attendance, including FuseSocial, FMSPCA, St. Aidan’s Society and AHS, talking about different programs and services for seniors across the region.

The event is only for people who are 55 or older, the municipality is providing transportation to the expo.

“You can get information about staying active, transportation, mental health supports, basically things that can benefit senior’s overall health and wellness,” said Jodi Sperber, Health Promotion Facilitator with the Community Wellness Team.

The expo will run from 10-2.

The event also falls on the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. In the evening of June 14, business and some municipal lights will be changing to the colour purple to recognize the day.

“Hopefully people will recognize that and start some conversations the following day about elder abuse because it is an important social issue that’s happening,” added Burns.

In Canadian stats, over eight per cent of older adults will experience some sort of abuse in their golden years.

Burns notes the day is to raise awareness of the issue, not just for seniors but for all age groups.
