RMWB Organizations Clean Up At 27th Alberta Emerald Awards

It was a big night for RMWB organizations at the 27th annual Alberta Emerald Awards.

Ecole MacTavish came out big winners as EcoYolo took home the award in the Youth category for their work on reforesting Fort McMurray.

The group was presented with a cheque for $5,000 to see their continued efforts to help in the region’s recovery.

The school also took home the first-ever Energy Efficiency Champion Award for their solar-powered greenhouse and community garden.

In addition, Syncrude and the Fort McKay First Nation took home the Large Business award – for their Beaver Creek Wood Bison project.

The project, which has been underway since 1993 – places Wood Bisons on Syncrude’s reclaimed land, showing the oil company’s desire to improve the environment.

25 years after bringing 30 bison from Elk Point National Park, around 300 bison roam 300 hectares of land – with some 100 calves born yearly.

The oil giant and indigenous group have been working to restore the native bison population to what it was before the oil sands were developed.

The population of bison is maintained through sales of breeding stock with other bison operations.
