Rugby Knights Prepare For Home Opener And Rugby Festival

The first ever Youth Rugby Festival is making its way to the RMWB.

This weekend, the Fort McMurray Knights Rugby Club is hosting its inaugural festival – with a goal of promoting the growth of rugby in the community.

It will also be a chance to connect youth – looking for rugby role models – with some of the players on both men’s and women’s clubs.

Knights Head Coach Tim Van Vliet tells Fort McMurray News this will be a way to teach Fort McMurray what Knights-brand rugby is all about.

“Our appreciation and tolerance for pain and discomfort seem to be getting less with each generation so, we really need to provide individuals with an opportunity to be challenged. That’s what this festival promotes – to have a brave face when defeated and to be gracious in victory.”

Van Vliet adds up to 500 attendees are already expected at the festival – which takes place Saturday at Shell Place – starting at 9 a.m.

He says there is will also be plenty to do for the kids who come out.

“There will be a youth-drop-in from 4 to 15 years old. Then the high schools are taking the field for a tournament. That’s exciting because we’ve never had an inner-city league before so, all the high school teams have been training.”

The festival will culminate with the first game in ten years on home turf for the Lady Knights – which will be followed by the men’s game.

The ladies are underway at 2:30 – followed by the men at 4 p.m.
