Safe Community Wood Buffalo Reminds Residents To Buckle Up For Safety

Safe Community Wood Buffalo is reminding you about the importance of buckling up.

The Charity organization has adopted the “Buckle Up Wood Buffalo” group – in an effort to advocate child passenger safety through a car seat safety clinic.

Buckle Up Wood Buffalo is a group of child passenger safety technicians who provide hands-on tips to help you ensure your child’s safety while driving.

Childhood Injury Prevention Coordinator Lesley Pearcey tells Fort McMurray News the biggest mistake parents make with child car seats is not following the provided instructions.

“You need to make sure you’re reading the manual for that particular seat. You also need to read the owner’s manual for your car – because there is a section in there regarding child restraints, where they can be installed and how they can be installed.”

Pearcey says there are numerous factors to take into account with child car seats and booster seats, from how it fits the child and how it fits your vehicle.

She notes after doing check stops with RCMP this year – they saw a shocking number of mistakes.

“Almost 90 per cent of the car seats were not installed correctly. So, it’s one of those things where you think you did it right – but maybe you didn’t. We just want to increase the impact of awareness of this information and get the education out there.”

The car seat clinic will take place this Saturday from 1-4 p.m. at Summit GM.
