Secret documents reveal industry's fight against emission regulations

Secret correspondence suggests industry's fight against Federal carbon emission restrictions.

In documents obtained through Access to Information Legislation, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers told government officials, their proposed regulations for the upstream oil and gas sector were seriously deficient.

Although CAPP Spokesperson Travis Davies declined to comment on the correspondence, he says industry is concerned compliance could cause shut-downs or threaten their competitive edge.

"Whether that's cap-and-trade or carbon tax, it needs to conform to some ideals that are going to make it fair, that are going to ensure that we got a balance between economic activity and environment , and  that its going to able to be harmonized throughout the provinces in Canada and our major trading partners in the U.S.," said Davies.

It's unclear when the regulations, slated to be announced last June, will be unveiled.

Environmental groups say delays in implementation highlight Ottawa's cozy relationship with industry.
