Seven New Layoffs At Fort McMurray Intl Airport

The Fort McMurray International Airport is laying off multiple employees.

CUPE Local 1505 says seven of their members were told they no longer have a job due to ‘difficult financial times.’ The union group was told by the members just one hour before they were let go.

President Judy Collier tells Fort McMurray News she’s disappointed that the Fort McMurray Airport Authority didn’t get rid of higher-paying management positions instead.

“We’re sad to go through this, we went through it last year with the RMWB and even though its seven members at the airport, it’s a small unit, to begin with, so it really hurts the unit in general.”

Collier says they’ve talked with all seven individuals explaining they can take a severance pay or wait to be recalled if the airport decides to add their position again.

In 2015, there was a total of 73 CUPE members working at the airport. After these layoffs, the number is down to 13.

“With the maintenance workers that just got laid off, we will be watching closely because our collective agreement does prevent against contractors coming in to do their work,” added Collier.

She notes security and the custodians are contracted workers.

Fort McMurray News contacted the Fort McMurray Airport Authority but didn’t receive a response.
