Severe Crime Rate Increasing Across Wood Buffalo

Crime in 2017 saw a big increase across the RMWB.

That’s according to Statistics Canada’s annual report on police-reported crime.

Last year, Wood Buffalo RCMP dealt with 6,775 incidents in Fort McMurray, up from the 5,985 in 2016.

These incidents led to 1,913 adults being charged, the highest in five years. Over 120 youth were also charged, up from just 87 the year prior.

These number of incidents are down from previous years where they peaked at 8,751 in 2013.

As for the rural hamlets, crime was also up as there were 1,573 incidents. In 2016, there were only 1,448, however, last year’s totals are down from 2013-15.

The report says 372 people were charged including 12 youth.

Wood Buffalo’s severe crime rate index increased nearly 10 points to 92.68.

Across the province, crime was also up, especially in the rural communities.

Crime rates were 38 per cent higher in rural areas compared to urban.
