Snow Still a Possibility Despite Warmer Temperatures and Seasonal Change

Despite the warmer weather – the winter may not be done with us just yet.

Senior Climatologist with Environment Canada Dave Phillips tells Fort McMurray News in previous years we’ve seen an abundance of snow in March and April.

He says he’d be completely shocked if we didn’t see anymore in the coming weeks.

“About 20 per cent of your annual snowfall falls after this date and that’s not to say that’s going to happen in that amount but my sense is I’d be the most surprised person of all if we didn’t see the white stuff from this point on.”

In years past, Fort McMurray has seen, on average, 20 cm of snow during the spring.

Meanwhile, temperatures are expected to hover above zero and peak around nine degrees over the next week.

Phillips notes people should soak up the sunshine while they can.

“The air temperature might be five degrees but when you’re walking in that sunny side of the street it could actually be another five or six, seven degrees warmer than that five degrees, so it’s going to feel like double digits.”

Though there is no precipitation in the forecast in the near future, the possibility of snow will linger until the end of April.

As for the Spring, we should see normal temperatures. After a colder than usual winter, we can now expect a warmer than usual summer.

Winter officially changes to the Spring on March 20.
