Syncrude, Fort McKay First Nation, EcoYOLO Nominated For Provincial Awards

What do an oil company, a First Nation, and a group of young students all have in common – the goal of improving the environment.

The Alberta Emerald Foundation announced the finalists for the 27th annual Emerald Awards on Wednesday.

Syncrude and the Fort McKay First Nation are finalists in the Large Business Category for their Beaver Creek Wood Bison Project.

This project started back in 1993, where 30 bison arrived at Mildred Lake from Elk Island National Park - east of Edmonton. Since then the herd has grown to roughly 300 with about 100 calves born every year.

For 25 years, the wood bison have been roaming the reclaimed land north of Fort McMurray.

Meanwhile, students from cole McTavish are finalists for the youth category.

EcoYOLO, a non-profit aimed at replanting trees lost in the Horse River Wildfire, is one of two nominees for the award.

The group has received over $17,000 in project funding which helped them plant 1,650 trees last summer with the help of 200 students.

The awards will be presented on June 5, 2018, in Calgary.
