Take A Minute To Change A Life With World Suicide Prevention Week

It’s World Suicide Prevention Week and the Canadian Mental Health Association Wood Buffalo wants you to reach out to those in need.

Suicide is a major cause of premature and preventable death and CMHA Wood Buffalo and Some Other Solutions are coming together to fight the stigma.

Executive Director for CMHA Wood Buffalo Christine Savage tells Fort McMurray News it’s imperative for people to see the signs of suicide, if they hope to prevent it.

"You may notice a change in their behaviour or different things that they're experiencing. Just take a moment to have a conversation with them. Recent research has been done with people who've attempted suicide and they said what would have changed that for them, is if someone had a conversation with them."

CMHA Wood Buffalo and SOS will be visiting Fort McMurray schools this week, to discuss the importance of suicide prevention with school counsellors and teachers.

Suicidal thoughts affect people of all genders, ages and ethnicities but the signs often signal if and when someone truly needs help.

Savage examines the national suicide rates.

"Last year, 4,000 people died from suicide in Canada and it's estimated that every day in Canada - 11 people take their life and 210 make a suicide attempt. Suicide really occurs in all social, economic and ethnic boundaries."

On Monday, Mitchell’s Cafe be selling cookies with the “take a minute to save a life” slogan written in icing and proceeds will go to suicide prevention research.

CMHA Wood Buffalo will be also be holding a ceremony of hope on Wednesday at Dr. KA Clarke School to remember those who’s lives have been lost to suicide.

If you’re having thoughts of suicide, you can call Some Other Solutions at 211 and talk to someone.

World Suicide Prevention Week runs until Saturday, September 16.
