Thousands of Students Getting Reduced Transit Fees

Thousands of students across Alberta will be paying less for transit fees.

On Monday, the province announced their new act to reduce bus costs by at least $300 per school year. High school students could save $300 while post-secondary students could save as much as $550 per school year.

This will only affect students who live 2.4 kilometres or more from their school and have to take the city bus.

“We recognize the burden that school and busing fees have placed on parents,” said David Eggen, Minister of Education.

Right now, the cost to ride the bus in Fort McMurray is $1.25 per fare. Residents can also get monthly passes, costing $45.00.

Students can also use the bus during non-school hours and still receive the reduced fees.

This is expected to help around 33,000 students in Fort McMurray, Calgary, Edmonton, Grand Prairie, Medicine Hat, Red Deer, Sherwood Park, and Lethbridge.
