Throne Speech highlights push for new oil sands markets

The Progressive Conservative government promising oil sands growth, paired with environmental stewardship.

In a Speech from the Throne marking the outset of the Spring Session, the province pledged to ease regulatory burdens on Alberta operators, arguing that simplified project approvals will push economic prosperity through imporved market access.

But Lieutenant Governor Donald S. Ethell says the drive for the bottom line will be remedied with a focus on regulation.

"Developing our natural resources responsibly to safeguard Alberta's environment, grows its markets and keep our economy strong. The Regulatory Enhancement Act which combines multiple bodies into single regulator for oil, gas and coal is critical part of this plan, " said Ethell.

The PCs say they will cooperate with the federal government to usher in an environmental monitoring plan which is world-class, transparent and scientifically credible.
