Transient population makes Fort McMurray a target for fraudsters

Provincial police say Fort McMurray's transient population makes an for an easy target for fraudsters.

March is recognized as Fraud Prevention Month across Alberta.

Constable Amanda Gowin with the RCMP K Division says identity theft and card skimming, among the most prevalent crimes in the province, could easily sweep our city.

"You're used to seeing that kind of transient population so people come and go so people may not pay attention to it because it's something that they deal with on a daily basis, just the transient nature of your population. That makes it easier for people that come in from these other places whether it be Toronto or Montreal or even just from Edmonton, the different crime groups," said Gowin.

She recommends you regularly monitor your financial activity for any suspicious transactions.

Police also say Alberta's elderly are often targets for scam artists.
