Tree Canada Continuing Efforts To Re-Green Fort McMurray

The Operation ReLeaf Program is back for a second consecutive year.

Tree Canada is looking to provide grants to residents and community groups to re-forest Fort McMurray with FireSmart trees.

In 2017, the program saw over 86,000 trees planted in the region.

Residents can receive up to $3,000 and groups can get up to $10,000 – so long as they meet the program requirements.

President of Tree Canada Michael Rosen says this is a part of their pledge to re-green the RMWB following the wildfire.

“We believe these community grants will go a long way in helping residents re-plant after the 2016 Horse River Wildfire and will encourage all homeowners throughout the region to implement FireSmart practices in their own backyards.”

Applications will be approved on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Grants are available to those in the RMWB looking to plant fire-resistant trees on private property and to groups looking to plant or give away to homeowners.

The grants are offered in partnership with FireSmart Canada – ensuring all trees being planted fall under their guidelines and are fire-resistance.

The only time these trees can be planted on Municipal property is in designated areas on municipally sanctioned community planting days.

FireSmart Canada President Laura Stewart says they are thrilled to see the program continue in the RMWB.

“Research and science have taught us that the choices we make with landscaping materials on our properties have a tremendous impact on the vulnerability of our homes. We encourage residents to learn more about the FireSmart program and the simple steps they can take to reduce wildfire risks at home.”

The deadline to apply is June 8 and all applicants must meet the requirements of FireSmart guidelines.
