UPDATE: Search crews look for missing boater

A 69-year-old man is missing after falling overboard on Lac La Biche Lake.

Yesterday, Lac La Biche RCMP and other first responders were called at about 8:30 p.m. They attended the scene, about 15 kilometres west of Lac La Biche, where two men were removing commercial fishing nets.

Police say a wave struck the boat causing a 69-year-old to fall into the water. A 62-year-old also fell overboard but managed to swim to shore and call 911.

RCMP, Fish and Wildlife, Alberta Parks Officers and Little Divide Search and Rescue started a search and rescue operation this morning.

"It will be a water based search so right now we have four vessels that are going out onto the water to initiate that search," says Constable Chris Clark. "They have search and rescue volunteers as well as police officers, conservation and wildlife officers in those boats."

Neither of the men were wearing life jackets at the time and wind gusts were causing some rough waters.

The 62-year-old was brought to hospital where he was treated and released.

It's the second boating incident Lac La Biche RCMP responded to in the past week. Last Friday a 53-year-old man fell out of his fishing vessel and into the water. He was rescued and only suffered minor injuries.

"He wasn't a strong swimmer either in that situation," says Clark. "We just want to remind people that as they are out there on this long weekend, to make sure that the weather is decent when you're out on the water. As well as, they need to make sure they have emergency equipment with them, to make sure they're wearing life jackets."

Fourteen people are involved in the search today.
