Veterans ‘Left In The Cold’ Unite For Better Compensation

Recent statements that veterans are asking for too much compensation are causing quite a stir across the country.

Veterans at Fort McMurray’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch 165 are inviting the public out to take part in a rally in solidarity with ‘left in the cold’ protests taking place in Ottawa and all over Canada.

The rally is to show veteran unity in light of the recent comments made by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that veterans are asking more than government can give.

Media Relations Officer with Branch 165 Bill Rockwell tells Fort McMurray News it’s always seemingly an arguous process for veterans to receive compensation.

“If you lost your legs to an IED or a landmine or whatever kind of injury, you have to go back to veterans affairs every year just to show them your legs haven’t grown back. There’s aspect of this that are just borderline, you can’t make it up, it’s ridiculous.”

Now branches across the country are standing in solidarity to take a stand for veteran compensation and let their voices be heard.

Rockwell adds you don’t have to be a veteran to be outraged by the mistreatment.

“What we want as a group is a return to adequate compensation and some of the more ridiculous aspects to be ironed out. We don’t want to go to court with government, we aren’t asking for more, we are asking for what we used to have.”

The rally will take place at the Remembrance Cenotaph – next to the Legion on Thursday at 11 a.m.
