Westwood Student Among 30 Across Canada Taking Part in Prime Minister’s Science Fair

A Westwood Community High School Student is heading to Parliament Hill for the Prime Minister’s Science Fair.

17-year old Dhvani Patel is one of 30 students across Canada who will take part in the event which will feature both Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Federal Minister of Science Kirsty Duncan.

He will be showcasing his SMART Agriculture Technology project which looks at increasing productivity for farmers, reducing water usage, among other things. Back in May, Patel won a silver medal and the “Challenge Division: Resources” in the senior category at the Canada Wide Science Fair – for the project.

"This feels great. I get to represent Westwood, FMPSD and Fort McMurray," said Patel, in a release.”

This isn’t the first time Patel has shined on a national level. Back in March 2016, he came in second in the University of Waterloo “Canadian Computing Competition” scoring 74 out of 75. He’s also planning on attending the University – studying software engineering.

For the past two years, he’s also won gold and silver at the Wood Buffalo Regional Science fair.

"Dhvani Patel is an innovator and a wonderful role model for his peers, who is well-respected by his teachers,” added Cynthia Shelley, Principal of Westwood Community High School. ” For the past several years, Westwood has been building strong advanced placement and computer science programs. I believe that Dhvani’s accomplishments have been encouraged and fostered by the exposure to these programs.

The Prime Minister Science Fair will take place on September 26, at Parliament Hill – in Ottawa.
