Wildfire Season Ends, 107 Blazes in Fort McMurray Forest Area

It’s the first day of November which marks the end of Alberta’s wildfire season.

Over the last eight months, there were 107 wildfires in the Fort McMurray Forest Area which burned 3,295 hectares. One of the fires was responsible for over 2,000 hectares.

Last year, there were 93 fires that burned 1,350 hectares.

Information Officer Lynn Daina tells Fort McMurray News there big issue this past season was lightning.

“The balance of [the wildfire] were very small, a lot of them lightning strikes, we had a real lightning flap go through here at the end of June, so that did definitely lend itself to a lot of starts.”

Unfortunately, 25 of the local fires were also human caused.

Across the province, there were 1,286 fires which burned roughly 59,769 hectares.

Due to the calmer season, crews from across the province, including in Fort McMurray, helped other provinces during their wildfire seasons.

More than 680 firefighters helped fight blazes across Canada and in the United States.

“We did send our crews out to B.C., Calgary, High Level, Lac La Biche, Ontario, Peace River, Rocky Mountain House, and the Yukon,” added Daina. “They all came to our aide whenever we need it and fortunately the firs moved at different times which frees up firefighters in areas like ours that we a little bit slower.”

Meanwhile, Daina says people should still take fire safety seriously even during the colder months.

“Be careful out there with the OHV’s and the campfires and keep in mind there’s still potential for fire to start from that not being looked after the way it should be.”
