Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake Unemployment Rate Continues To Rise

The local unemployment rate is the highest its been since October 2017.

According to Statistic Canada’s latest Labour Force Survey, the rate for Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake was 6.5 per cent for June – up slightly from May when it was 6.4 per cent.

The region also lost 300 full-time jobs month over month, while part-time positions remain unchanged for a third straight month.

Meanwhile, the report also shows 800 construction jobs were lost from May to June with 8,200 people working in the sector.

As for the natural resources sector, which includes forestry, oil and gas, gained 400 positions month over month.

Provincially, employment held steady in June, and the unemployment rate was 6.5 per cent.
