Wood Buffalo Food Bank asking for donations

The Wood Buffalo Food Bank is asking for help from the community.

The food bank has seen an increase in client usage and is struggling to keep the shelves fully stocked to be able to help hand out hampers to people in need.

Executive Director for the Wood Buffalo Food Bank Arianna Johnson says although all food donations are greatly appreciated, the food bank is asking for donations full of nutrition.

"We really try to focus with our clients on not just feeding but making sure they're getting good nutrition because you can send a child to school on a full belly but if that child is malnourished they still don't learn, a grown man going to work who's malnurished can't be as productive at work or as safe at work as he would if he was fed proper nutrition," says Johnson.

Johnson says the food bank hands out food hampers to 10 to 12 families each day.

"I think food banks in any community are the most grassroots way in which we help those who live in poverty and they're the first step in really helping people out of poverty because if they're hungry and they're malnourished, they don't have the facilities or the abilities to get out of the situation that they're in," says Johnson.
