Wood Buffalo Food Bank hungry for donations

A slump in donations has the Wood Buffalo Food Bank pulling from its budget to purchase food.

"If we have the means to purchase food, we do," said Executive Director Arianna Johnson. "We also will periodically get a shipment out of Edmonton, so if Edmonton has an excess of something that we need and we can find a trucking company who will pick it up for free for us and bring it up here, then we'll get a shipment out of Edmonton."

Johnson says the majority of the shelves are sitting empty, despite a steady demand during the Summer months.

"Normal trends for all food banks is in the summer, we have less food coming in, than we do from say, October to April and May," said Johnson. "Come October, it's Thanksgiving and people start to think about us more, and then Christmas comes and people continue to think about us...it's winter and people tend to think about winter as being hard times. Things kind of tend to dwindle off coming into April."

Donations of staples, such as brown sugar, salt and pepper, condiments, canned stew, pasta and crackers are welcome at their downtown location on King Street.
