Wood Buffalo RCMP Warns Public Of “You’ll Be Arrested” Phone Scam

Wood Buffalo RCMP are notifying the public about an ongoing phone scam.

On Monday, the Mounties received over 20 reports from people who said they received suspicious phone calls saying they'd be arrested if they didn't pay money owed to the Canada Revenue Agency.

The scam has the suspects calling victims, and advising that tax money is owed, and use high-pressure tactics - even threatening victims they'll be arrested if the money is not paid back immediately.

Wood Buffalo RCMP have a number of tips, should you find yourself in one of these situations.

The Mounties say if you get one of these calls, get as much information as possible - while not providing any of your own information and tell them you will call back.

Potential victims should always verify who the caller is and if they are from a legitimate website, they should never share personal info, such as legal age, date of birth, social insurance number or address.

RCMP note to also be cautious of any questionable links in emails as some criminals have used a "phishing" technique to steal personal information, should you click on the link.

The CRA does not ask for payments via prepaid credit cards or iTunes gift cards. These are methods used by perpetrators to hide their criminal activity.

The Mounties add they do not make arrests based on overdue CRA fines.

If you feel you've been victimized - you're encouraged to contact RCMP or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.caor toll-free at 1-888-495-8501.
