27-year old man succumbs to workplace injuries

A 27-year old man is dead after a workplace accident in the Mackenzie Industrial Park.

Occupational Health and Safety officials say the man died in Edmonton hospital late Thursday afternoon after being airlifted from Fort McMurray Tuesday.

At 5:00 am that morning the worker was operating a lathe at the Team Industrial Services site on MacAlpine Crescent when his clothing was caught in a lathe.

Investigators say he was able to press the emergency stop button, but not before he incurred serious injuries to his upper torso, his internal organs and possibly his face and head, wounds required surgery.

A stop use order remains in effect for the machinery in question.

Team Industrial declined to comment as a provincial investigation continues.

As is customary, OH&S will not release the deceased's name.

reminds me of a deadly accident with a young female student in MIT, who got her hair caught in a lathe and died, after she got mangled in the lathe chuck.

No loose clothing hair and jewelery on hands should be worn when working in a machine shop. The risk of entanglement with high speed rotating equipment is very high.
Sounds like a case of complacency in the workplace, and not following mandatory work practices.
RIP another life lossed .
