The reporters wanted to do a store on oil sands but weren't allowed to go inside the mine, so they chartered a plane and took a lot of interesting shots.

Very good article and excellent pictures. In describing the process, he says that the trees are cleared and some muskeg is removed and then the tar sand is mined. I wish it was that simple BUT there are many meters of overburden that lays on top of the mother lode and it is very expensive to move it.

Yes, tar sand mining is dirty but there is usually some drawback to every industry. Why the NDP's and easterners in Canada keep slamming the oil sands is beyond me. The oil sands are fueling the economy in Canada and everyone benefits..
