My fiance and I have been considering moving to Fort Mac for quite sometime and think that in the New Year we will make the move.
It will be my fiance, brother, his girlfriend, myself and our 3 dogs.
My fiance and brother work trades-just wondering how easy it is to get jobs out there? These can be jobs on camp.. Also, if there is anyone on this site that does construction/trades in Fort Mac, what is the pay like? We are trying to see if the pay difference vs. cost of living is better than here. I am an Educational Assistant with a Social Work background and would be looking for a job in this field, either with the school board or social service agencies. Not sure how many of these opportunities are out there.
Work trades? Do you mean they are licensed trades professionals (electrician, plumber, mechanic) or are they just labourers/helpers? If the latter I would not consider such a mover personally. You would probably have no problem finding a job as an EA but they don't make oilfield salaries.
We will be needing to find a place to rent, must be a house and must be dog friendly. How likely is this?
Well, I hope you have oodles of cash ready. fort-mcmurray-news/rental-and-vacancy-rates-highest-for-wood-buffalo-cmhc-t11570.html
I also understand it is difficult to find units that allow pets. Three dogs will probably be impossible.
As far as our dogs go.. Is the city Dog Friendly? (Dog parks, dog events, hiking trails etc.) And is there any places (dog specific or butchers) where we will be able to purchase raw meat for our dogs. (Our dogs eat a Raw diet.)
Dog friendly? Yes. As a pet owner I can attest to this. Raw meat diet? I would suggest shopping at Extra Foods here. I wouldn't serve their meat to humans. You are going to find this a very expensive way to feed your animals as we don't really have butchers in town. As best you will get a shop that buys cryo pac meat that they cut to retail sizes.
What is the bus service like?
0600 to 2300 I believe. It isn't the TTC.
What is medical care like? Are there hospitals/doctors offices in town?
Both. Being new to town you can expect to only get into some clown's GP practice. We have a hospital but for many specialists you will have to travel to Edmonton.
What is the shopping like? Is there a mall? Grocery store etc? I saw that there was a safeway there but am unable to find a flyer online to compare prices.
If you live to shop you will hate it here. If, like myself, dislike rampant consumerism you will enjoy the bleak retail landscape. Groceries are offered by several different stores. I would suggest looking into Save on Foods for your safest source of food.
Any info from people currently living there would be helpful. Really nervous about making the move and want to know if it will be worth it.....
Overall? A great place if you have an education or skill in high demand. It costs more but what you earn will more than make up for the price difference. The best way to get here is apply before moving and even better if the company will look after your move and other perks such as temporary housing etc.
Showing up in January with three dogs in tow with nothing in place will be a mighty unpleasant experience.
