Report: Social Sector Continuing to Experience Staffing and Funding Issues

A new survey shows more than half of social profits in the community are experiencing staffing issues.

On Thursday, FuseSocial released its third of five surveys which looks at the sector’s ability to recovery from last year’s wildfire. Of the 70 organizations surveyed, around 54 per cent said they have employment vacancies.

The two biggest reasons being the lack of staff returning after the wildfire and health issues.

LISTEN: Waypoints Breaks Ground On New Women’s Shelter

Waypoints has officially broken ground on a new building for its women’s shelter.

The Unity House has been providing programs and accommodations for women and children fleeing domestic violence for over 30 years.

$10.6 million was raised over the course of eight years to fund the new building, with $2.5 million coming from the municipality to help fund the expansion.

House Fire in Thickwood Quickly Extinguished

Crews are on scene at a house fire up in Thickwood.

Around 2:30 p.m., the blaze broke out at 101 Romar Street.

Deputy Chief of Operations and Technical Services Brad Grainger tells Fort McMurray News the fire is out and they’re now determining the cause and damage.

Suncor Posts Net Earnings Of $1.35B In First Quarter Of 2017

Suncor Energy’s production increased in the first quarter of 2017.

The Calgary-based company posted net earings of $1.35 billion, compared with $275 million in the prior year quarter.

In the first quarter report, Suncor highlights a production increase of 4, 500 bbls/d to 448, 400 bbls/d, from to 453, 000 bbls/d in the prior quarter.

Syncrude will be giving away $10,000 to one local non-profit.

Over the weekend, at the Spring Show & Market at MacDonald Island Park, people can head to Syncrude’s booth and vote for where they would like the money to go.

The speaker of Alberta’s Legislative Assembly is paying a visit to the RMWB.

On Wednesday, The Honourable Robert E. Wanner brought Alberta’s Mace to the region to speak with members of the community and visit several schools.
