Interest in Cycling club in Fort McMurray

Trying to find out if there is interest in starting a competitve cycling club in Fort McMurray. I am new to the sport but like the idea of having races to train for as motivation. The club would be open to all ages and skill levels. Would like to see Fort McMurray send our young athletes to the Alberta Summer Games. Currently the Games have three cycling events; BMX, mountain biking, and road races.

Hi. I am moving to Fort McMurray and have been trying to find out what's up on the cycling scene there.

Visited for a week earlier this month and my impression was that the area wasn't very road-cycling friendly. In fact, I was thinking maybe I should just bring my MTB.

Is there roadie activity up there? I'd be interested.

Drafting behind a big truck was great in the movie "Breaking Away," but it's not really my bag :-)

I used to do 2000km+ cycling in toronto for the summer time, before i came to fortmc, I still brought my road bike, but havent put it on the road once, i mountain bike alot more, the roads are way too dangerous out here, i have almost been hit twice this year so far crossing spots along thickwood / confed where the paved walking/ bike path breaks, too many people texting and driving and too many trucks on the road, every body is always in a rush, Its safer on the trails, nothing like our beautiful Birchwood trail system,
I know there is a group of roadies that do 881, check the bike shop downtown the owner can hook you up.

just yesterday i was almost hit while CROSSING! the intersection with my bike, a lady was busy texting and waiting to make a left turn onto Millinnium drive, and started to roll onto the walkpath.. it just pisses me off so much how inconsiderate some drivers in this town are towards cyclists.

I was about to mention people cycling on 881. I know a few people who just go south on 63.
Otherwise you'll have use a mountain bike on very nice trails in Birchwood park

as much as i love cycling, i can't see how someone be willing to ride on 881 or 63 , ive seen the cycling groups that are on the highways sometimes, with the type of driving and near death experiences i have had on these highways in a vehicle, I just would not risk my life on those roads for the joy of cycling.

Thank you for your responses thus far, I am just back from doing my first GrandFrondo. Please email at info@mcmurraysbesthomes.com for further info and leave a phone number and I will call you. Now to answer some questions.
1. let me know if you plan any group rides, I ride the Birchwood trails alot
Yes there will be group rides both on road and on trails.
2. I would like to see time trails held in the outer roads of Beaconhill on Monday evening at 7:30 starting at Shaw.

Here is my vision:

Wood Buffalo Cycling Alliance will become a registered non-profit society, with a strong contingent of volunteers. The club's mission is to function as an organization through which people of all ages may pursue their passions for cycling in the many forms of the sport, including road riding, mountain biking, BMX, racing, training, skill development and social riding. And the club's membership, which will steadily grow, will consists of approximately XXX members including both an active youth and adult membership.
Mission
Dedicated to providing children and adults within the Fort McMurray area a high-quality level of local, provincial and national bicycling sport racing involvement.
Vision
To be honest and ethical ambassadors of the sport of Cycling and to continually provide a safe, friendly and supportive environment to build individual character and confidence through healthy competition and cooperation. And to work with the City to make Fort McMurray a safer place to cycle.

this initiative sounds great , It will be very usefull to get kids and adults more active. Hope to see some group rides popping up,
just some ideas:
1. Family group rides, - ive seen group rides held in other cities, much more catered for novice to younger riders. Police escorted and on a weekend .
2 Can we possibly have a race in the birchwood trails? - " ride the birch challenge" or the birchman throphy just some ideas,
3. Female bike race: i've seen alot of new female cyclists with some serious gear and bikes recently so the interest may be there.
4. Painted bike lanes downtown and streets in fort mc?,our bus network already supports bike racks on most of the fleet.

keep us posted on the future initiatives for this cycling alliance.

I have started a Facebook page called Wood Buffalo Cycling Club check there for updates and ride info.
email adress is patdardis@shaw.ca

To get club status with Alberta Cycling we need five members, the same number need to create a non-profit society.
