Athabasca River Bridge will open both directions Wednesday afternoon.
Southbound Highway 63 traffic shifts from Grant MacEwan Bridge to new Athabasca River Bridge in Fort McMurray
Fort McMurray... Motorists are advised that southbound Highway 63 traffic will shift from the Grant MacEwan Bridge to the new Athabasca River Bridge in Fort McMurray the afternoon of Oct. 26, weather and conditions permitting.
Once the shift occurs, two southbound and two northbound lanes will be available on the new bridge.
The traffic shift and closure of the Grant MacEwan Bridge allows the bridge’s rebuild to begin. The bridge will be lowered and its superstructure will be replaced. The rebuilt bridge will open to traffic in the summer of 2014.
Motorists should use caution in these areas and obey all signs and message boards. Motorists are reminded that fines for speeding are doubled through construction zones when workers are present.
